Yoga for Empowerment

The power of yoga as more than a form of exercise and meditation is often overlooked. The practice offers so much more than one can likely imagine, with many of its benefits left untapped. For cancer survivors in Illinois, yoga practice has empowered them to remain strong during and after treatment. According to a MySuburbanLife article (http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/2015/03/02/lisle-yoga-class-seeks-to-empower-cancer-survivors/ad56qjz/?page=2), a cancer center in Warrenville, outside of Chicago, offers a yoga course for cancer survivors. One if its participants has taken what she’s learned in that class, and begun teaching at a yoga studio in the area. In the article, survivor Amy Merritt describes how yoga made her feel strong, mentally and physically, even when cancer treatments were making her weak. Yoga became an outlet for her to gain that strength and empowerment she needed to continue her fight, and ultimate victory, against cancer. In addition to the benefit of empowerment, the yoga course offers a safe environment for cancer survivors to connect and interact with one another, which is a critical connection for many survivors to have. Through stories like these, it is clear that yoga offers so many benefits outside of just the basic health and wellness facts we hear about so often. By simply conducting a Google search for “yoga for empowerment,” dozens of pages come up with information, yoga poses and flows, and videos for empowering yoga. The practice isn’t limited to empowering those who are battling a sickness. In a previous post, we talked to Jenny Nuccio from Imani Xchange in Kenya – a program that offers women in adverse situations the opportunities to make a living for themselves and their families. The program also offers yoga classes for the members. Through these classes, they are able to maintain a healthy lifestyle that many of them seek, while interacting with one another outside of their homes and work places. It offers an amazing social setting that is undoubtedly empowering to them as women.
